Charlton Riverside

Charlton Riverside

Located between the royal grandeur of Greenwich and the military splendour of Woolwich, the south bank of the River Thames at Charlton is both industrial and semi-derelict. The outward appearance conceals a rich heritage: sections of the riverfront have ‘safeguarded wharf’ status, thereby preserving and sustaining industries that have been carried on here for over a century and depend on the river for their livelihood.

Running through this is the Thames Path, a more recent leisure facility – a popular riverside walk and cycle-route. These images document one mile of the path between the Greenwich Yacht Club and the Thames Barrier.

(This is my contribution to the RPS 'Project Frontiers'. Members were invited to contribute a body of work comprising five images on the subject of 'Edgelands'. The images were made between May and August 2021.)
